Beauty School 101: Makeup Kit Essentials

January 22, 2015

This post has been long due as a lot of people have asked me such questions are – where to start with make up, what to get, what is good and what is essential. I have been diving deeper into beauty and make up for the past couple of years, so I am happy to share some insight and favourite staple products.

Essentials:

Foundation/ BB Cream

If you are new to make up, then it is good to start with something lighter, that looks and feels natural. A light coverage foundation or a BB cream is a great starting piece. I am а huge fan of the L’Oreal Paris Nude Magique BB Cream or the Vichy Idealia BB Cream.

Concealer

Good for covering blemishes and dark circles. Try something that matches your skin color.  very nice and heavy duty concealer for blemishes, that can be used under the eyes is the NYX Full coverage CONCEALER JAR.

Setting Powder

It mattifies and creates a translucent shield to prolong the foundation or bb cream. Also can be used to refresh the make up and blot shine during the day. A favourite basic powder for me is the Borjuis Healthy mix powder.

Blush

Start with a safe color, something that is natural and not very easy to mess up. Powder blush is the safest. NYX POWDER BLUSH is great as it is not very, very pigmented and comes it a large variety of colors. The safest are Mocha or Amber, both are matte and suitable for different skintones.

Eye Liner

This is something of a staple. For beginners just go for a simple kohl pencil liner. The liquid and gel varieties are much easier to mess up. When you look for pencil liner, you want it to be pigmented and buttery, but not too soft, so it doesn’t smudge. I am a fan of the Avon Kohl Eyeliner.

Neutral Eyeshadows

A great neutral palette is an investment for everybody, even for beginners. I know it will be too much to say, but a palette such as UD Naked or Too Faced Chocolate Bar are a good start for everybody, and you will need only one palette with everything in it – shimmers, satins, mattes, lights and darks.

Mascara

The mascara is an investment, your eyelashes are key to the look, as you can go with only bb cream and mascara and see a huge difference in how you feel and how you look. The best high end mascara in my experience is Diorshow Iconic Overcurl and a mascara that is much more inexpensive, but very good is the Avon Luxe Limited Edition.

Lipstick

Try something very natural for starters, don’t go overboard with brights or mattes. One of the best basic lipsticks is Maybelline Color Whisper, it is moisturising, sheer and comes in a ton of different shades. Also a good option is the ColorDrama Lip Pencil, it is matte, comes in different shades and is very natural feeling on the lips.

Lipgloss

It is one of the most used beauty products and can create a lovely glossy pout. I don’t like sticky glosses, so I am a fan of the NYX Butter Lip Gloss, it comes with a doe foot applicator, so is very easy to apply and you can choose from a variety of colors.

Optionals:

Primer

Primers make make up last longer and deal visible pores or shiny skin. A good primer is one that makes your skin feel soft and velvety, but does not clog your pores.

Eye Primers

It primes your eyelids covering veins and making them a blank canvas, also makes eyshadows last longer and prevents them from creasing.

Bronzer

Gives you a bronzed goddess look and is great especially for people with fair to medium skin. You can go very far and a bit crazy with the bronzer, so be careful! A matte bronzer can be used easily for contouring.

Highlight

Absolute favorite of mine as it gives the face a fantastic glow.
Lip Liner

The fad of the moment great for lining your lips for darker shades of gloss or lipstick or using the more creamy liners on their own. 2015 will be a huge lip liner year.
