Toms: the New Cool Thing + Saving the World Bit by Bit

май 19, 2011

What? There is a new cool thing? And that new cool thing is actually a new cool brand of shoes? No, not converses peeps. New I say!  And a social campaign that is heading these new cool shoes?

Yep, the new craze is here and it is called TOMS.

The shoes are part moccasins, part sneakers, part canvas comfy espadrilles. Come in different colors and patterns, flat or with wedges, laces or no laces. The variety is great, and as I have not worn a pair, can’t tell how comfy they are, but assume they are very much so. Can’t help to compare them with converse, as they are a bit of a status and a way of life- expression. You know, it is not Louboutin or Jimmy, but they talk about free spiritness and a bit of badassness.   But the best part of it all – you buy one pair and TOMS, donates a pair of shoes to a child in need.

This movement is to be admired! Here is what TOMS answer to the question why shoes:

Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or going to school, these children are at risk:

•A leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through bare feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases, and the long-term physical and cognitive harm they cause.

•Wearing shoes also prevents feet from getting cuts and sores. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected.

•Many times children can’t attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don’t have shoes, they don’t go to school. If they don’t receive an education, they don’t have the opportunity to realize their potential.

So badassness in a very, very good way I must say. Too bad they don’t sell (ship) them here, I would definitely buy a pair if they did.

PS: Special thanks to my friend Kristina, who rides on the DC fashion wave, and enlightened me about this topic 🙂
